How Do Fiber Optic Couplers Work?


Fiber optic couplers either split optical signals into multiple paths or combine multiple signals on one path. Optical signals are more complex than electrical signals, making optical couplers trickier to design than their electrical counterparts. Like electrical currents, a flow of signal carriers, in this case photons, comprise the optical signal. However, an optical signal does not flow through the receiver to the ground. Rather, at the receiver, a detector absorbs the signal flow. Multiple receivers, connected in a series, would receive no signal past the first receiver which would absorb the entire signal. Thus, multiple parallel optical output ports must divide the signal between the ports, reducing its magnitude. The number of input and output ports, expressed as an N x M configuration, characterizes a coupler. The letter N represents the number of input fibers, and M represents the number of output fibers. Fused couplers can be made in any configuration, but they commonly use multiples of two (2 x 2, 4 x 4, 8 x 8, etc.).

The need for fiber optic couplers

We use electronic couplers all the time: such as a telephone coupler which lets you connect both a telephone and a fax machine to the same telephone line. Or a CATV coupler which lets you connect several TV sets to a single cable from Comcast. Basically you can buy these couplers from Home Depot or other electronic retailers.

Optical couplers have the same functionality as electronic couplers: They split the signal to multiple points(devices). Fiber optic couplers are needed for tapping(monitoring the signal quality) or more complex telecommunication systems which require more than simple point-to-point connections, such as ring architectures, bus architectures and star architectures.

Passive couplers and active couplers

Fiber optic couplers can be either active or passive devices. The difference between active and passive couplers is that a passive coupler redistributes the optical signal without optical-to-electrical conversion. Active couplers are electronic devices that split or combine the signal electrically and use fiber optic detectors and sources for input and output.

The difference between electronic couplers and fiber optic couplers

Electronic couplers are easy to make because electric current flows as long as you have physical contact between conductors. But optical signal is in a completely different domain. You have to align the tiny optical fiber cores precisely (9um for single mode and 50um or 62.5um for multimode fibers), so there won't be a huge power loss when you split the signal.

What Is a Network Adapter?

Since most of our attendees are contractors, we try to give them a realistic overview of what jobs they will see and what tools they will need. It is very important to understand when you need an OTDR and when it is not appropriate.

If you are installing an outside plant network such as a long distance network or a long campus LAN with splices between cables, you will want an OTDR to check if the fibers and splices are good. The OTDR can see the splice after it is made and confirm it's performance. It can also find stress problems in the cables caused by improper handling during installation. If you are doing restoration after a cable cut, the OTDR will help find the location of cut and help confirm the quality of temporary and permanent splices to restore operation. On singlemode fibers where connector reflections are a concern, the OTDR will pinpoint bad connectors easily.

OTDRs should not be used to measure cable plant loss. That is the job of the source and power meter, which duplicates the actual fiber optic link, as we described in the first part of this article and is documented by every standard ever written for cable plant loss. The loss measured will not correlate between the two methods; the OTDR cannot show the actual cable plant loss that the system will see.

The limited distance resolution of the OTDR makes it very hard to use in a LAN or building environment, where cables are usually only a few hundred feet long. The OTDR has a great deal of difficulty resolving features in the short cables of a LAN and is more often than not simply confusing to the user.

And one OTDR manufacturer once told one of our Fiber U classes that they could justify the cost of an OTDR simply by using it to test the length of the fiber on a reel when they get it to make sure they got what they paid for. The class laughed at the instructor and pointed out the cable manufacturers mark length on the cable jacket and a $2 calculator would do as well!

Since OTDRs are very expensive and have only specific uses, the decision to buy one must be made carefully. For that reason, most instrument rental companies will rent one for a few days or weeks when you need them. However, if you are not familiar with their operation or cannot understand the results of OTDR tests, it would be much better to hire a specialist to do the testing for you.

How To Wire a Wall Network Port


You may know how to make your own network cable, let's talk about how to hide it. Depending on your home, the actual job of running patch cables behind the wall or under the house, and making both of its ends come out of the wall, can be ticky. You might want to hire a handyman for that job, especially the part where you need to cut holes in the wall. In this tutorial, i just teaching you how you can make an ethernet jack, with the ends of the patch cable already sticking out of the wall. And this is a CAT5e Network Cable, also known as a RJ-54 Ethernet jack. A CAT6 jack has the same wiring, however.
Before you do these what tool do you need:
Puch down tool, a puch down tool just cost your several dollars, and Ethernet jack and wall plate. You can buy these separately and you can find a wall pate that can house more than one jack.
The Steps:
a. Using the Fiber Cable Stripper to strip the patch cable about 2 inches from its end. You can strip more than 2 inches if needed, since the extra length will be cut off, but note that there's a limited amount of patch cable coming out of the wall so you don't want to cut it too short. Spread the eight wires from one another. There's no need to put them in a particular order since the pins on the Ethernet jack are color coded.
b. Placing the cable in the middle of the jack and push its wires on the pins of the matching color for the 568B standard. This means that the orange wire goes into the orange pin, the blue wire goes into the blue pin, and so on. Technically, you can use the 568A wiring standard, but in this case you'd need to do the same with the other end. generaly, you want to avoid using 568A for network ports because it could cause problems in the future if somebody else repairs the port and uses the more common 568B standard.
c. Using the punch down tool to punch these wires down on their pin in one quick motion. If you do it right, the wire will be punched down, and the excessive wires will be cut off.
Now you just need to install the wall plate and you are done with one network port. You can make another port at a different end of the house that connects to the port you have just made if you want to have just a single wired connection.

Fiber Optic Tools For Installers


The frequency of problems caused by fiber optic tool is high: their poor design, improper use, poor condition or the unfamiliarity with their use all are sources of problems during installation. Installation tools include some big hardware like bucket trucks, trenchers, cable pullers or plows. The need for these will be established early in the planning stages. Many contractors do not own expensive equipment like this, finding it more cost effective to rent it as needed. If your crews are not familiar with a particular piece of equipment, subbing the work to someone who has both the equipment and an experienced crew may be much more cost effective, as mistakes in their operation can be disastrous – both costly and dangerous.
Outside plant cables and premises singlemode cables will generally require fusion splicing for concatenation of long cable runs and splicing on pigtails for termination. Since fusion splicers have become less costly, more contractors have purchased them. Other contractors who have fewer projects that require splicing prefer to rent them, knowing they are getting a splicer that is a newer model with the latest technology that has been recently serviced. The downside of a rental unit is your installers may not be familiar with that model and require some training or time to familiarize themselves with it. If you own your splicer, it’s assumed your crews are familiar with its operation and need only to inspect the unit to ensure it’s working properly and the arc electrodes are in good condition.

Most contractors own termination equipment for multimode fiber as it is used on most jobs. Generally contractors have a preferred method of termination, either adhesive/polish or prepolished/splice types. Either type requires dedicated toolkits. For epoxy or Hot Melt terminations, the appropriate curing ovens will be required, and the two are quite different; the Hot Melt oven is much hotter and will ruin epoxy connectors if used on them by mistake. If you use epoxy or anaerobic adhesives from your stock, check the expiration dates on all of them to make sure they are fresh. Also check for other consumables like wipes, isopropyl alcohol, cable gel cleaner and of course, connectors.

Prepolished splice connectors have been getting better and easier to use. Newer termination kits include a quality cleaver like those used with fusion splicer and a visual fault locator to verify the internal splice. Since newer kits can now produce connectors that have lower losses, around 0.5 dB, a new kit (and perhaps some training) and the latest connectors could be a good investment.
When checking out the termination kits, pay particular attention to the condition of the tools. Of course missing tools will need replacement, but hopefully that was done when the kits were inspected after the last job. However, jacket strippers, fiber strippers and cleavers can wear out or be damaged, so its important to check their operation with some sample fibers to see if they are working properly.
Let me repeat that thought: It’s mandatory to check out every piece of equipment you intend to take to a job site to ensure its proper operation and let the installation crew reacquaint themselves with its operation. This process needs to be done with enough time to have the unit serviced or replaced and restock any consumable supplies. It should also be obvious that one never puts back on the shelf any equipment that has had problems in the field. It should immediately be replaced or sent out for repair to be ready for the next job or discarded.
Let me caution you on another problem we have seen recently with tools. Several recent complaints of poor quality tools, especially fiber strippers, have led us to believe that poor quality imports are becoming more common. In one case, the tools appear to have been counterfeit, branded with a well-known American name. I suggest you purchase tools only from reputable sources and inspect them on receipt to ensure they work properly.
Finally, as the equipment is checked out and readied for use, make certain that appropriate safety equipment is packed with the tools. Everyone who works with fiber needs safety glasses and clean, unscratched ones will make seeing those hair-thin fibers much easier.
